Happy New Year 2014 …
The end of the year is an excellent time for reflection! A time to look back at your challenges, failures and successes … and this is exactly what I have been doing the past 4 weeks.
Like so many of you, I have been busy reflecting on my life, my business, my habits, etc… and much of what I have discovered was both a rude awakening and enlightening.
I am not one for resolutions. I never followed through with them for much longer than a few weeks anyway. Does anyone? A few years back I was introduced to the concept of identifying 3 words to set your intention for the year. This just makes more sense to me and looking back over the past couple of years I feel good about this strategy.
However, this strategy alone definitely is not enough. My intent for this blog post is to share what I have learned and to publicly declare my intentions for 2014 … doing so has proven to be exceptional accountability
Let’s start with a few of the very tough realizations I acknowledged:
- I was not that focused on my business growth or systems
- I allowed myself to be distracted often, in both the physical and mental space
- I did not focus or pay much attention at all to my finances: books, revenues, expenses, or profits
- I started more projects than I completed
- I did not plan my business or personal life at all
- I spent more than I invested
The year also brought a few new lessons or mantra’s for me:
- F.O.C.U.S. = Follow One Course Until Successful
- The MONEY is in the MATH
Regretfully it was November before I learned these, but both were eye openers for me and hit me like a truck! The are both so simple, yet unfortunately not so obvious (to me anyway). But from the moment I heard each one I have integrated them into my daily mindset.
A few of the highlights for me are:
- I enjoyed a 3 week family vacation in FL
- My wife and I decided to have our 2nd child (due in June 2014)
- I reunited with one of my very best friends to start a new business … officially launching Jan 2014
Lastly, I am stoked to share something awesome with you … I managed to delete more than 60,000 emails from my Gmail Inbox so that I now have a clean inbox with 0 emails at the end of each day This task is part of my goal to be clutter free.
This is something I have attempted to achieve the past 4 years but have continually failed, so this is really exciting for me. YAY!
I happen to believe in destiny, intention and the law of attraction so I believe that 2014 will be one of many firsts for me, a year of great success and transformational breakthroughs.
My New Year “words” are expanded into “short phrases” which evolved from a statement I placed on my website nearly 3 years ago.
The original statement = Be You! Do Something You Love!
My 3 phrases / mantras for the New Year are:
- Be More
- Do More
- Have More
My New statement = Be You! Do Something You Love! Have The Life You Dream Of!
The immediate question I asked myself was, how are you going to live up to your 3 phrases / statement? How exactly are you going to Be More, Do More, Have More? The answer is rather simple … I created a massive action plan and put it on my 2014 Calendar.
Quick bit of honest humor for you: my wife and I were going through Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University early 2013 and he was making a joke about how people do really dumb stuff like let annual events/Holidays sneak up on them due to a lack of planning. He was referring to people who say things like “Christmas really snuck up on me this year!”
He then said, “Really … it comes every year at the same time; how did it sneak up on you?” Well the honest humor for you is, the dumb person he was talking about was me! Funny, but Sad The good news is that I now recognize this dumb behavior, at the age of 40, and have made a conscience choice to change!
So as we go into the New Year, my BIG ROCKS (i.e. What is MOST IMPORTANT for me) is scheduled on the calendar with reminder messages
For the first time ever, I sat down with a calendar and listed out all of the important events happening in each month through the entire 2014 year. No more Holidays sneaking up on me in 2014. Thanks to Dave Ramsey
Then I read a really great blog post titled 240 Morning by a super smart dude, Caleb Wojcik. This post was great for me because he points out that we only have 240 mornings per year to get stuff done, that’s 20 mornings per month to get stuff done!
So when you calendar these days and then block off your important events / big rocks (i.e. the most important (personal & professional) events) you aren’t left with that much time … certainly not enough time to allow for confusion or distraction!
Planning my calendar was important because I can now be much more consistent and organized with my business, but before I get to my business, I would like to share a few personal intentions for the new year.
Personal Daily / Weekly / Monthly Habits:
- Since we are blessed to live so close to the ocean my wife and I have decided that we will watch at least 2 sunsets every week from the coastline / beach
- I will attend YOGA at least once per week
- I will go running at least twice per week
- I will read the Bible each day for a few minutes
- I will read/finish 2 business books each month
One tool I plan on using to keep me on track for this is the Way of Life app for the iPhone.
2014 Business Clarity:
This is very important! Maybe you have also suffered from lack of business clarity, I hope not, but maybe you have or do suffer from it. If you do, I hope this section will be valuable to you.
Let me explain … with the help of my incredibly supportive and amazing wife I finally accepted the fact that I have been extremely distracted, and disorganized in business. It was as if I woke up every morning and started with a blank slate … nothing to focus on, nothing created, nothing to grow … just a blank slate and sense of confusion and desire to generate income somehow.
This created a constant sense of uncertainty, fear, and feeling of desperation. I am not proud of this nor that comfortable sharing, but doing so will hopefully help some of you.
Imagine … opening a brick-n-mortar business and showing up to work every day and not knowing if you were selling clothes, fast food, groceries, information, travel, etc… I mean it really is common sense, right?
How the hell can you ever get to where you want to go if you don’t even know where you are trying to go to?
As embarrassing as this is to admit publicly, I am doing so because I am pretty sure that some of you may have the same experience in your life or business. The say the first step is acknowledgement. Once I came to the harsh reality that I had no clear focus or intention for my business I was able to focus on setting a clear intention moving forward.
My business intention is now …
“Financial Freedom & Abundance in 2014″
Ok so that is easy to say, but likely will not be that easy to achieve so I have spent the past few weeks obsessively thinking, planning and writing out a Life & Business Plan for 2014. But let’s be clear this intention isn’t specific or measurable, so allow me to do so in detail below:
As for my business intentions …
I have divided my income generating activities into 3 major areas:
- Private Consulting Clients
- Creating Information / Digital Products
- Mini Partnership Opportunities
I now understand who my target consulting client is and the specific ways I can help them. The calendar has already helped me clearly see how I can add more value and consistency to each client. Furthermore I now see how to keep control of time invested with each client project. For example, I understand that I can only work with 4 clients max at any one time and no more than 10 the entire year.
Regarding my products … this was a much needed area of improvement! For the first time I understand why I had each of my product ideas originally and how they each fit into the overall product puzzle. I have been able to sit down in a few focused sessions and map out each product from start to finish, including building out all of the marketing automation required to put them on auto-pilot. I love marketing automation
Lastly, but far from least! I have had many partnerships over the years, a few great ones, a few terrible ones and some that just never produced a single token of value for anyone. When looking back over all of them I learned a few important lessons and with these lessons I have created a very unique opportunity to share with a select few (this will not be for everyone).
I have never seen this done before in the world of online marketing, but I can tell you this; I wish someone had shared something like this with me 5 years ago. So what is it, you ask?
Effective Jan 2nd I will be interviewing qualified candidates to join me in one or all of my twelve product partnership opportunities. The short & sweet of this is that I am going to give a few people the opportunity to watch over my shoulder as I build and launch a new product and you share in the profits (this is as close to an EASY BUTTON as I have ever seen when it comes to online marketing).
Now that I have my 2014 calendar planned, I am an Entrepreneur at heart so I am always planning for and expecting that one life changing deal / opportunity, so I like to have a BIG AUDACIOUS GOAL.
My BIG AUDACIOUS GOAL for 2014 is one that I first had the opportunity to experience back in 1990 (thank you DAD) and I have been committed to making it a common occurrence in my life and business:
- I plan to take my family on a trip to FL in a private Gulfstream 5 Jet
I hope you have an amazing 2014!
